APKS Story, Purpose,
And Direction

Eight essential sections that explain who we are, why we exist, and how we work with communities across Bangladesh.

01

Empowering communities through inclusive development and collective well-being.

01 — Introduction

Who We Are

Alorpoth Kollyan Sangstha (APKS) is a Bangladeshi non-political, non-profit, non-sectarian, volunteer-based social welfare and nongovernmental development organization officially launched in 2012. The organization was formed with a clear mission to support the underprivileged, the less fortunate, and the most vulnerable communities in Bangladesh through practical action that improves everyday life.

APKS empowers communities, promotes education, and mobilizes resources to improve lifestyles and livelihoods. It uses innovative development strategies to build sustainability while helping disadvantaged people gain greater self-sufficiency, dignity, and control over their own future.

APKS is committed to human rights, public awareness, and inclusive social change — working without discrimination based on class, tribe, origin, area, religion, or gender.

Born from compassion — shaped by the lessons of Rana Plaza.

02 — Background

Our Origin Story

APKS was born from compassion in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza tragedy, when the urgent needs of affected people made clear how deeply many communities in Bangladesh were exposed to insecurity, poverty, and social neglect. Under the leadership of Shamim Ara Sultana, volunteers came forward with blood donations, food, medical support, and direct assistance for injured workers and distressed families.

That experience revealed the need for more than emergency relief — lasting change required long-term, community-rooted development focused on livelihoods, dignity, and protection.

In its early years, APKS focused strongly on women's enterprise development. Over time, the organization expanded into a multidimensional model addressing women's rights, child labor, health, education, and social justice.

We believe in community-led, need-driven development

Who we are
01

Leading NGO in Bangladesh's Capital

APKS operates in Dhaka and stands out as a leading NGO focused on women and children. It was founded by a dedicated group of youth development activists and social workers with backgrounds in women enterprise development.

02

Driven by Experience & Vision

This unique genesis provided two significant advantages: leadership driven by Shamim Ara Sultana, Chairperson of APKS, and a team with extensive field experience and a broad, comprehensive outlook on socio-economic, environmental, and health development.

03

Expanding Since 2014

Initially focused on women enterprise development for the poor and marginalized, APKS expanded over time to encompass a holistic view of development — addressing interconnected issues such as women's rights, hazardous child labor, childhood development, and basic education.

04

A Multidimensional Approach

APKS differs from many NGOs that specialize in one or two areas. Sustainable development, we believe, can only be achieved by tackling multiple issues simultaneously — maintaining an emphasis on a multidimensional, transparent, and integrity-led approach.

APKS takes a strong stand against corruption and bribery, encouraging organizations everywhere to follow its lead in promoting transparency and integrity.
